  • Should Election Day be a national holiday?

I think so. Just because I like having more time off from work.

Can't, it's on a tuesday. Looks like we'll just have to make it a four day weekend, right?

I would only support this if we made voting compulsory. No one should get a day off if they're not going to get off the couch and go vote.

Why not just have weekend voting?

We'd have to amend the Constitution.

Well, that might be a problem because if you put it on a Sunday, a lot of Christians would feel like they were unable to vote, and on a Saturday, orthodox Jews wouldn't be able to vote. Early voting might be the solution there though.

What's so wrong with Christians voting on Sunday? You have amended the constitution many times, why not one more time?

We've only amended it fewer than 30 times. Most state constitutions have been amended hundreds of times. Amending it wouldn't be that hard in this case, I think. I'm just pondering whether it's a good idea, given the sabbath for Jews and Christians.

Festivus is already a holiday and gives us the airing of greivances and feats of strength. I see no reason for mini-Festivus.

Not necessarily. The Constitution just says Congress gets to decide an election day - with the rise of early voting, we can have a final day for choosing the Electors (which is what Article 2, Clause 4 actually says), but have voting open all weekend (The Electors just won't be chosen until the specified day). I'm sure it'd be held up.

Voting isn't work. I seriously don't see why they would refuse to vote.

Forcing people to vote is a ridiculous idea. If you don't care enough to vote, we don't want your opinion.

Wasn't the tuesday thing only some throwback to harvests and markets or something anyway? Seems a bit daft to retain it if its now an impediment to people getting to the polls.
