Yes, absolutely. In Georgia you get judges putting out TV ads promising that they will apply christian values. No thank you. Virginia does it RIGHT. Judges are appointed by the governor and approved by the legislature, and serve long (10+) year terms.

Over here they have an independent board that does the appointments I believe. They try and keep the judiciary as unpoliticized as possible which is nice.

Didn't your supreme court used to actually be part of the legislature? The House of Lords?

Why'd you change that, by the way?

The Law Lords, yes. Bear in mind that they were a non-elected system also. I don't know much about how the system worked, but I believe they were appointed by existing members of the judiciary. Could be wrong though.

Did I say that? No. All I did was summarize the elements that add up to hypocrisy.
I swear, your style of argument gets more Kenobi-like with each passing day.

I believe Alby is fully on board the partisan train. Which is, of course, his right.

What was the problem with the Law Lords? Why'd you switch them to being a separate supreme court? I'm not criticizing the decision--I just don't understand the reasoning.

I'm not sure, it was probably a part of the move towards the Lords becoming an elected chamber.

That seems to defeat the entire purpose of the Lords. Why not just get rid of the House of Lords if you're going to make it elected?

If you're going to keep the Lords, what you may as well do is just sort of turn it into a really big appointed advisory body of experts from industry and science and stuff to help with legislation. But isn't that basically what it is right now, plus some people from the Church of England and a handful of your wonderfully anachronistic hereditary aristocracy?

The decision has been pretty much reached (and which I disagree with as it happens) that an elected or at least majority elected second chamber is preferable to an unelected one. I see the argument for it, but I think having an unelected revisionary upper chamber has actually served us very well.

Having two elected chambers is kind of redundant.

We Americans are all too familiar with that problem.

Those in particular. The federal senate is not quite as redundant because senators are allocated differently than representatives at that level.

....? Are you suggesting having an advisory body that can amend (but not block) legislation alongside an elected parliament is the prototype for fascism?
