Ouch, that sucks. Good luck finding a better job for the Supercitizen, a job that truly deserves you!

Nah, no severance for anyone. Reps for the employers screwed it up, epic fail, multiple times. They didn't even drag the fight to the next round which is the NORM. No severance packages, no time given to find jobs or possibility of getting outsourced to another company, or relocate within the company. Also, no information shared. We are called to hear the news within an hour from the invitation. It is so no one has much time on their hands to leak it to the press or get angry or stuff like that, we just feel pretty much stung and shocked. That way we just sort of accept it and move along.

I'll get a new job, that's OK. I have good references and background, I'm not worried about that. It's just that well... my pay will definitely drop, and I've got a new mortgage and two small kids. And I liked my job. I really did, I had some great 6 figure projects, too.

Well at least I got laid in terms of one word. That's almost positive.

The double talk pisses me off though. Their weak jedi **** doesn't work. They've known it for quite a bit, yeah it might hurt but not as much as it hurts the rest of us, and should I feel sorry for them since they get coaches for the duration of difficult times so they can navigate through? As in how to fire people and not be bothered by it? **** that.

First time by the way. It really kind of sucks. I thought I had my ass covered being as senior as they get in the company, too.

Senior people get laid off first in some layoffs from what I've seen... more expensive = easier to meet layoff targets =/

Well, enjoy some time with the little ones at least. Maybe this is all just a plan by some higher being that may or may not exist to let you enjoy your kids while they're young. I know the first thing I'd do if I were laid off or between jobs is spend a week camping or something with my one year old, just letting him enjoy running about without anybody telling him not to go there, and letting me enjoy him enjoying himself

I'm sorry to hear it, Pekka. There seems to be a lot of that going around these days.

So sorry to hear about this, Pekka. Pretty scary when you have a young family. But I'm confident you'll get through it.

A good description of my exit from the corporate world. After 20 years, having made director level from a start in customer service, seemingly one promotion from VP and the boardroom, I was out. No reason given; it was a "re-organization" (corporate-speak for "your job doesn't exist anymore"). They added two junior-level functionaries at about half my total salary and shuffled my managerial/executive tasks to a VP. I did get a nice, soft landing in exchange for signing a "hold harmless" document.

It was quite a shock, but I'm now 7 years downstream and doing just fine in my own business. The evil outsider ExecVP they brought in to swing the axe only lasted another year. Not having burned bridges on departure, they are now a client of mine.

So take heart: happy endings are possible.

Happened to me like that. The told me Friday just before the day was over, "Don't bother coming in on Monday. You don't have a job anymore." No respect.

yeah there's a first time for everything

                            Oh well.

Kid: Now that is brutal. Respect is the right word.

You guys are right about seniority though. We make more money and yeah, that's a problem solved easy.

About offering my services instead, making them my customer through my company, it could be done. There's a big project I'm leading for my employer, and now that I'm being laid off, if the project still is green lighted, I might still lead it as a consultant. They actually do it like that in there and I'm the most knowledgable of the topic and have the connections to the outside world (vendors). That's in fact why they recruited me and pay the big bucks.

Hey, we can still do it.... let's all win.

I remember my first job out of college. I started for crap dollars and after a few years, and a lot of experience later I asked for more money. They refused so I quit (without another job lined up....The last time I did that) But the projects that I was working on required so much business knowledge that they were desperate and had to hire me back as a consultant to finish them. At about 4 times what I was originally paid. As soon as they asked about my availability to consult, I knew I had them by the balls which is how I was able to negotiate such a high consulting fee. They should have just given me the money I asked for in the first place.
