You barely have to leave sight of land to get to the Philippines.
And yet the Arab contributions to navigation and geography were immense, even to the mundane and unassuming (for example, azimuth is an Arabic word)

    • Arabs in the Mediterranean didn't necessarily have the same capabilities as arabs in the Indian ocean. Oerdin was specifically talking about ships from the Ottoman Empire.

      • The Ottomans were not Arab...

I think it's tragic that our young people don't know the difference between a landsknecht and a conquistador.

GOD DAMNIT I LOST 150 HOURS TO THAT ****ING GAME

And I bought Hearts of Iron 3 like, a week and a half ago, and lost a whole weekend to it.

                It's like crack, man.

And I'm not sure Arab baghlahs couldn't sail the open ocean.
i have to agree with reg here. the portuguese achievements were incredible. they dominated the entire indian ocean for a century with fewer than 30,000 men (at a maximum, sometimes there were only around 10,000 portuguese).

no muslim or indian nation could match them on the seas and they were only displaced with the arrival of the dutch and the english after 1600.

                      Oh oh.

It's on my soon to be acquired list.

                      • HOI3? Make sure you spend the little extra and get at least the first 2 expansions (Semper Fi and For the Motherland). They turn a horribly broken peice of crap into the best WW2 strategy game of all time. Seriously.

                          • That's a strong claim. I didn't buy HoI3 because I was told it was truly terrible. So it is worth getting now? Be warned, if you reconfirm your claim, and I buy it, and it's crap, then I get to blame you and your children and your children's children until the end of lunchtime next Thursday.

I bought vanilla, played about an hour and then threw the box in the corner in disgust. A year or two later I got the expansions and was just blown away. They fixed all the broken stuff and turned it into something outrageously good. Hell, I can spend endless hours just playing with the army organization stuff.

The only thing that's a bit weak compared to previous games is the over elaborate tech tree, but it's not game breaking, it just takes some getting used to. I played HOI 2 to death, but I'd never go back now.

                              • I enjoyed HoI2. Having bought it years after original release, the low resolution graphics were the only pain I can think of.
