Why do Canadians prefer huge houses squeezed together in the middle of nowhere?

    This is not really a revealed preference, because in most of the country it is illegal to build more densely.

    At the margin, more Americans would prefer to live in urban areas than actually do.

      Asher, the Bow River is not a large river, and the mountains are like 20 miles away from the edge of the urbanized zone of Calgary. Denver also has a river like that, called the South Platte. It doesn't constrict development at all. Calgary is in pretty much the exact same geographic situation as Denver.

        What Kuci said; and while once upon a time you had 'urban flight' to the suburbs, that's largely stopped and has reversed, with some people now starting to come back to the cities, particularly as several large cities have really effectively dealt with their crime issues.

        Further, moving to the suburbs has a lot of things associated with it, not just density; school quality, land prices, etc. I can't afford a house in a good neighborhood (or even a decent neighborhood) in Chicago, so I moved to a (fairly urban) suburb.

          Why did you need a new car, then, Asher?

            I don't work downtown. I don't drive with rush hour traffic.

              A river is a river and necessitates bridges.

              Denver has higher property taxes than Calgary does, so the people are apparently paying for the privilege of sitting in traffic more often.

                There's a big difference between a bridge like this:

                And a bridge like this:

                I have a friend who has lived in Denver for the past four years. Last night I asked him if he's ever experienced bad traffic there and he said no. Denver is much bigger than Calgary, both in population and sprawl.

                It looks like the Bow River is about 100 meters wide, which is about the width of the Genessee in downtown Rochester.

                  My impression of Calgary, when I visited, was that it was a poorly-designed city.

                    Based on...?

                    Calgary is in pretty amazing shape considering the explosive growth it has seen. It's very difficult to manage such growth.

                    The city has doubled in population since 1983 (when I was born).

                      There was a lot of traffic on the way to the airport. It was difficult to get around.

                        Err...?

                        Calgary = 1.1 million people
                        Denver = 619,000 people

                        Or are we now talking about larger metro areas? If so that's a completely different topic, as one city cannot manage that.

                          Don't even know what to tell you. There're a lot of people in Calgary.

                          I don't see how you can call it difficult to get around unless you have mental difficulties.

                          You were probably thrown off by Calgary's systematic roadway and quadrant system. It's notoriously difficult for some people to comprehend.

                          There are four whole quadrants after all. Four!

                            Yes we're talking about metro areas because in the United States, and I believe in Canada as well, city boundaries are pretty arbitrary. Denver's got "suburbs" that are totally urban, and just as dense as the incorporated city itself. Its metro is at least 2.5 times the size of Calgary's.

                              I dunno, it's just my opinion. It wasn't as nice as Edmonton, and there wasn't enough to do.

                                I'm not talking metro areas, I'm talking city. You can't do urban planning when you have 10 competing governments.
