By that I mean, that China has economic superiority over Taiwan that it can wield diplomatically, militarily, and, of course, in trade.

What sort of superiority? Be specific."You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Your favorite team, in any sport, is the one that just won. If you were a woman, you'd likely be a slut." - Slowwhand, to Imran

He didn't have a terribly good track record when he did rule China.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostIt's a shame we were unable to prevent them from becoming communist. If Chiang Kai-Shek had won, many lives would have been saved and China would be a much bigger economy now, most likely.

Taiwan is 4-5x times richer than China.Originally posted by DaShi View PostIgnore the pure stupidity of the "stuck on an island" comment, it's probably the huge population difference and the difficulty in developing such a large country. That's the simple obvious answer to why Taiwan became wealthy before China. Of course, that has changed dramatically. China economy now far surpasses Taiwan's, which is still struggling from the global recession.

The differences in the economies of North and South Korea are all the proof you need that communism is bad mmm kay?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

The Yemeni Communists were indeed supplying arms in the Dhofar rebellion, however because the border with Yemen is an easily patrolled and guarded desert, as opposed to a mountainous frontier, Oman was able to fortify the border and interdict supplies, which was crucial to ending the conflict.Originally posted by kentonio View PostWe successfully stopped a rebellion that was receiving cross border support without invading another neighbouring country. Whats your point?
Thus my point stands: you cannot win a war if your enemy can retreat to a safe haven to resupply and regroup.Originally posted by WikipediaAs a result of the various measures undertaken by the Omani government, firqats and regular SAF, the rebels were being deprived both of local support and supplies from the PDRY. This isn't about whether we would or wouldn't start a war. A war would be justified. If we were talking about bringing down a right-wing dictatorship then you and the rest of the Apolyton left would cream yourselves over the national liberation.Originally posted by kentonioGood (and utterly predictable) to see you being just as wrong as HC. America couldn't do a damn thing about it, and certainly would not start a war. It's not the 1960's anymore.
It wasn't even used as a weapon. It was used to eliminate cover that the Viet Cong could use to ambush civilians and US personnel. It's a despicable weapon that might have a justification in a total war, but otherwise has no place on the battlefield.
EDIT: I thought this quote was about agent orange but instead it's about Napalm. Oops. It's beyond me how Napalm is somehow worse than just shooting someone, but meh.
No, I'm not. There is no scientific basis for believing that Agent Orange is dangerous to humans. Dioxin, the chemical commonly cited as the dangerous component, is not the active ingredient. In fact, it's an impurity. Agent Pink, previously mentioned, was discontinued because of high levels of dioxin and only used in very small quantities; Agent Orange was brought in because it was determined to be safe for humans. The levels of Dioxin present in Agent Orange are significantly, like orders of magnitude, lower than what you find in ordinary soil or human tissue. Agent Orange was also not used to destroy crops; that was Agent Blue. Like I said before, Agent Orange sounds more menacing than Agent Blue or the other colors. You're seriously trying to say Agent Orange is harmless? Are you completely ****ing retarded?
"Victims" of Agent Orange frequently describe being sprayed with an orange mist. As I said before Agent Orange is a clear liquid. Suddenly that seems a bit fishy don't it?
The VA provides benefits for Gulf War Syndrome too, so what's your point? Both the Agent Orange symptoms and Gulf War Syndrome are completely made-up, unscientific bull**** cooked up by anti-war activists and veterans seeking to get money for their various non-war related health issues. The symptoms described by Agent Orange "victims" include pretty much everything from cancer to back pain. It's a load of crap. The VA is a government organ and is subject to the normal political horse****. It's said that if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes reality. The political cost of the VA not treating Agent Orange "victims" and Gulf War Syndrome "victims" is high enough that Congressional pressure forces it to do so.Oh and Reg, here's what those commies at the VA have to say about it.
The Vietnamese Red Cross has even stronger and much more obvious political reasons to play up Agent Orange symptoms. The International Red Cross is one of those anti-war groups that will pretty much lap up anything to make the US look bad in wartime.Last edited by regexcellent; September 29, 2012, 18:54.

Yes. Medicare recipients. **** them.
Seriously now, I'm not going to give veterans a pass for cooking up fake illnesses to get free money from the government, even if they are veterans. Veterans are just as capable of being fraudulent bastards as anyone else; in fact, probably moreso, because they've worked for the government.

I have nothing else to say to you. I hope that any veterans who post here who have friends or collegues who have suffered from these illnesses can brush you off for the heartless child you so clearly are.Originally posted by regexcellent View PostSeriously now, I'm not going to give veterans a pass for cooking up fake illnesses to get free money from the government, even if they are veterans.
