  • Has Obama been a good President, or a poor President?

Absent all other considerations, how well did he do his job?

This question is about effectiveness and competance, not ideology.

Pretty poor. Started out with good intentions of bi-partisan governance, and failed to adapt when those bi-partisan attempts were not reciprocated. His foreign policy has been pretty excellent though (which was a surprise).

Basically I think he'd have been an excellent president if he'd come into office at a time of less turmoil, but the Dems would have done better with a brawler than a thinker this time around.

Poor, and not because I disagree with his politics; but from the perspective of a supporter, he hasn't accomplished much of what he said he would accomplish. The healthcare reform was done poorly - again, nobody on either side of the aisle really likes 'obamacare', and it will not solve the main problems it needed to; he hasn't changed the rhetoric in Washington; he is just as bad as W in terms of personal freedoms (Guantanamo anyone?) and is almost worse in some ways - in the RIAA's pocket for example. The biggest promised success of his presidency was... saying he supported gay marriage? No, sorry, not an effective president.

He's been mediocre, which is sadly not an option in the poll.

Good/Citizen is the closest to me ("More Good than Bad" & "Citizen" meets me exactly).

From economic to foreign policy, I would say he's been fairly poor.

See, my problem with this: A president should not be evaluated on 'Good' vs 'Bad'. He should be evaluated as to whether he accomplished the goals he desired to accomplish; and separately, on whether those goals were beneficial goals. I don't care if you like or don't like W, for example; he largely accomplished the goals he set out to accomplish (well, post-9/11 anyway). So he wasn't all bad - even if those goals were not beneficial goals in your mind. I'd always rather a president get something done, even if it's not what I agree with (with some limits, like, not Stalin) than get nothing done - and that's largely what Obama's done (or, rather, not done).

His largest success is something he seems reluctant to run on: Obamacare. Which he got done by letting other priorities fall to the wayside.

What if you aren't fond of the goals? I think evaluating on goals is kind of silly.

                            This.

I compared him to his predecessor and his alternative (McCain/Palin), so he got "good".
