No, there's nothing wrong with being in academics. You don't understand what I said, which is a trait I see often with people who are academically bright.

My comment was based on his academic record. What you score in school doesn't mean you're intelligent, it means you're book-smart or wealthy enough to buy your grades. If you work with enough PhDs, you have to wonder how some of them tie their shoes.

I manage a couple PhDs, and they require a ton of hand-holding. Others are ridiculously good. The point is, the academic record itself means ****.

    • You really can't make a credible claim of Romney being stupid. He's incredibly successful, has a good academic record, and has reached basically the second-highest level any person can achieve in American politics with a pretty decent chance of actually reaching the highest. These things are not coincidences.

Also, Asher, people at American universities do not buy their grades.

They certainly don't at Brigham Young or Harvard.

          • Wait, what? You're telling me this story is real? I've thought that Gawker was something like The Onion and was ridiculing Romney with this obviously retarded quoted idea of his.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was mentioning earlier. You have a sort of naïveté -- not yet jaded enough to understand how the world actually works.

I'm not a test pilot either, but my first response to reading that quote was 'what a ****ing moron'. It's the kind of comment you expect from a 12 year old.

Just answer a question for me please that I've always wondered about: what exactly is this 'choice' that you're so proud about when it comes to medical decisions? Are you a doctor or a medical professional who is qualified to 'choose' which treatments to undertake or which drugs to take? Oh and given that you have the least efficient healthcare system in the developed nations, why would you think it would result in more efficient care

As for rationing, that is some incredibly stupid **** right there. The only treatments that don't make it past boards like NICE are hugely expensive experimental treatments, and guess what you can go get those privately if you want anyway.

This is exactly what Medicare doesn't do. All the reform proposals by the republicans have curtailing this sort of abuse in mind.

I don't need to buy my grades.

I do know that my professors wouldn't consider selling them.

How do you know that they would? Did that happen at U Calgary?

What doesn't Medicare do? What abuses? Your post didn't seem to actually be in answer to what I asked.

That's very trusting of you. I had a lecturer who told us once that a colleague of his had been offered a blowjob by a female student in return for a first in his course. He failed to mention the colleagues response.

We generally don't have flagrant and transparent corruption in the US university system, yes. You can't just walk in to the Dean's office and hand over a duffle of cash in exchange for a degree. (You can with online places, but they're not as well regarded). Instead, extremely rich parents can buy their children admission into a university (often in the form of donations), and unless the child ****s it up royally, the child will get a degree.
