Also, by abstaining I am not promoting the status quo. Promoting the status quo would be a vote against gay marriage, as in Virginia it is constitutionally banned. Abstaining does not favor either side. It is in fact a vote in support of the majority, whichever that happens to be.

I would certainly not sit back if real civil rights were being threatened. Gay marriage, since it is not one, is one I feel fine leaving to other people to decide. I care very much about the rights of other people. I know that if their rights can be taken away, so can mine. But if the government decided it was going to stop recognizing marriage, I would not think my rights had been infringed.

I never said it was. Morality is most certainly not legislated. That doesn't mean that gay marriage is a moral issue.

The issue is inequality and the fact that the government (and many organizations) grant privileges based on marriage status.

The issue is two classes of relationships, not the existence of marriage itself.
