    It makes perfect sense.

By abstaining you are effectively promoting the status quo, which is being bigoted as it denies equality to gays.

You'd probably "abstain" on a vote giving blacks the right to vote, too. A true conservative, you are. But no sir, not a bigot.

Would you like to explain how you got to this fairly outrageous conclusion?

Also, by abstaining I am not promoting the status quo. Promoting the status quo would be a vote against gay marriage, as in Virginia it is constitutionally banned. Abstaining does not favor either side. It is in fact a vote in support of the majority, whichever that happens to be.

I shouldn't need to explain it, and it's not outrageous at all.

        You are a conservative. Don't rock the boat. Doesn't affect me, then I don't give a ****.

If you feel no social injustice to keeping gay couples as second class citizens, why would you feel injustice to black people as second class citizens? You're the kind of ******* who doesn't get off his ass to be vocal about anything that doesn't directly impact you. You're the kind of ******* who was "indifferent" to racism. You're the kind of ******* who is "indifferent" to discrimination against gays.

Someone who sits back and does nothing when they're capable of helping is just as bad as someone who commits an act.

        Your logic is truly terrible.

Do you even know what status quo means?

I would certainly not sit back if real civil rights were being threatened. Gay marriage, since it is not one, is one I feel fine leaving to other people to decide. I care very much about the rights of other people. I know that if their rights can be taken away, so can mine. But if the government decided it was going to stop recognizing marriage, I would not think my rights had been infringed.

Do you? An abstained vote is basically saying "I agree with whatever the majority thinks."

Oh, give me a ****ing break. You're going to nitpick this like a legal scholar? Put down the ****ing textbook. Open your eyes. Morality is not legislated.

Are you saying if the constitution said it was okay to rape women whenever you damn well felt like it, you'd be "indifferent" as well?

Do you? An abstained vote is basically saying "I agree with whatever the majority thinks."
But you already know what the majority thinks, don't you?

So you agree with the bigoted position, making you a bigot.

The majority will continue to think what they think unless people start voting the other way.

I never said it was. Morality is most certainly not legislated. That doesn't mean that gay marriage is a moral issue.

But you already know what the majority thinks, don't you?

So you agree with the bigoted position, making you a bigot.
I don't think it is inherently bigoted. I won't deny many who oppose it do it solely on prejudice.

There's basically no more room in this conversation, HC.

You are a coward and a bad person if you are "indifferent" about gay marriage. I'm not saying this to try to be insulting, I'm being quite genuine. No good person can sit back while injustice occurs and consult the textbooks like you seem to be doing. Heartless.

I have far more respect for the position of people like Ben who are against gay marriage for religious reasons. They may be misguided, but at least they're no cowards.

I don't believe there is some sort of cosmic injustice in saying the government won't officially recognize some sort of domestic partnership.

That's because you're a heartless conservative with a diminished capacity for empathy.

To be clear, I also wouldn't find it unjust if the government stopped recognizing traditional marriages. Is there great human suffering from being denied a signed letter from a state judge saying "yep, those two are married"?

Not even joking. If you don't know why it's an important issue, you're ignorant either willfully or not. You're more likely incapable of true empathy.

                            Are you an idiot?

The issue is inequality and the fact that the government (and many organizations) grant privileges based on marriage status.

The issue is two classes of relationships, not the existence of marriage itself.

Honestly, are you this dense? Or have you just conditioned yourself to never think on this issue, as most Republicans have seem to have done?

No, it's an injustice because of how our society functions, not because of some cosmic principle.
