J.J. Abrams's (did I indicate possession there correctly?) new show. Apparently it's about some crazy **** happening and making it so that a magnet spinning inside of a copper coil no longer generates electricity.

My questions: If electro-magnetism stopped working, wouldn't all the atoms stop binding together into molecules? Wouldn't everybody and everything become an elemental slush? Or am I missing some key component of this show's mythology?

Final question: Does anybody expect this show to last more than one season?
    John Brown did nothing wrong.

I love Abrams's (I have no idea) stuff in general, but this sounds dumber than a bag of rocks.

      This sounds retarded.

Further question: Why do I see title screen characters wielding crossbows? Do the changes to the laws of electricity also prevent the combustion of gunpowder? WTF?
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

...maybe the idea is that, after the world goes dark, everything goes down in an orgy of looting so only gun-nut survivalists have the massive stockpiles of ammo to last fifteen years?

Anyway, I don't watch TV, so I guess it's mox nix to me.

Atoms bond by electron sharing and ionic bonds. I think the bigger problem would be the loss of the Earth's magnetic field, which prevents solar winds from stripping away our atmosphere (I reserve the right to be completely wrong about this).

While I haven't watched the show, just from googling around it appears that the phenomenon causing the lack of manmade electricity is a MacGuffin intentionally kept mysterious and the potential solution would be a plot device. If that is the case, then one can simply assume that someone or something deliberately targeted some narrow manifestations of electromagnetism but not others. I think they even made a movie out of that premise once, and then a ****ty remake too.

            Unbelievable!

Watching the pilot. Apparently when an airplane loses its power it falls straight down and crashes on its belly.

                Accompanied by this:

"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

As usual I don't know what you're talking about.

"Le Benny Hill Show" was a highly sophisticated auteur production of high-brow British Comedy. Look it up.

S.M. Stirling has a series of books with this idea.

                      It's not new

                      ACK!

Wait, and this is set in America?

What's the point of a post-apocalyptic TV show if it doesn't stroke the fantasies of gun collectors?

Obviously stroking the fantasies of gun control activists

Wait, so hold on. Why would the airplane lose power? Even if it's fly-by-wire its flight controls could operate on battery, and in the meantime the jet is powered by fuel, not electricity. Batteries don't use the dynamos. So now chemical batteries don't work? And neither does internal combustion?
