Would solar cells work? What about thermopiles? I demand explanation for the inconsistent physics in a tv show
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

      Spoiler:
At the end of the pilot someone uses a computer, so apparently electricity still exists, but for some reason appliances need some secret device in order for them to work.

Fifteen years after the fall, there is no electricity, not even flashlights work.

Apparently, dentists and hair stylists still do.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Watched the first episode tonight. It looks promising. Firearms are still around, civilians aren't supposed to have them. Most of the militia though appear to be carrying bows, swords or muzzleloaders, the officers get the few remaining automatic pistols. Primarily I think it's an excuse to stage sword fights and use bows.

Why not? I've seen MST3K, it's on Netflix. I was first introduced to it through RiffTrax, the successor.

                    Hmm.

                    You're alright, HC. You're alright.

                    For now.

Sounds like they weren't exaggerating when they called it dystopian. I never understand why .22s aren't more abundant in these settings. Not to mention hand loading, which can be done without electricity and would surely be a productive use of labor in a post-apocalyptic nightmare scenario.

Hold on - it's not that easy.

                        Mike or Joel?

Also: the show was iffy at best, but I'll watch another couple of episodes at least to see what's there.

I saw a few episodes of it, a few with Mike and a few with Joel. Mike's the guy who does Rifftrax and I think he's funnier.

I was wondering why everyone looked so damn good. I think you solved it.

Even if it's fly-by-wire its flight controls could operate on battery, and in the meantime the jet is powered by fuel, not electricity. Batteries don't use the dynamos. So now chemical batteries don't work? And neither does internal combustion?
All hydraulic controlls would go down though.

Maybe it's because trade has broken down so they don't have access to the ingredients of modern propellants. Also there must have been a massive die-off of the human population in the first few months after the blackout began so the remaining population may not include people with the necessary skills to synthesize chemicals. Still, fortunately we haven't completely abandoned libraries, so books with the necessary information should be available still. Also, the people look remarkably well dressed. Oh, and why couldn't people make diesel engines? They don't use electricity. A diesel would be a ***** to crank, but I've actually lived in a house that had a crank started back-up diesel generator.
