It looks like a goddamn hunting rifle, doesn't it? That would be because it is one. It's sold in the civilian world as the M1A and is very popular for large game. The AR-15, with its smaller cartridge, is easier to shoot and has lower recoil. In addition, its stock is better designed to handle the recoil and prevent muzzle rise. The AR-15 is used to hunt small game, and as a target rifle. It's also used in some home defense situations, but that's better served by a shotgun. Here's another instructive example:
That's my shotgun. It's a 20-gauge Remington 870 express, good for clay pigeons and hunting. It would take maybe five minutes to change out the parts to make it look like this 12-gauge combat shotgun (courtesy google image search):
