The British haven't been culturally relevant since about 1965 or whenever the Beatles were out. And it took Americans hopping on their bandwagon for their meteoric rise to even happen.
Actually, just look at how many of the top grossing films in recent years were based on British books (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc.):
