The Marine Corps doesn't have an officer aptitude test like the Navy and Air Force do. They use SAT scores as a proxy.

But yes, my SAT scores are a decade old now. Most people who sign up to be an officer are still in college, though (doing PLC over two summers while in college). It makes a lot of sense for them.

Judging by the other applicants, another knock on me is I didn't go to grad school. A lot of applicants have MBA's, MSc's, and JD's, I'm noticing (even Ground with JD's).

YES IT IS. The Army has more money and is bigger so you have a much better chance. It needs more people so there are bonuses available for certain jobs. What you should be looking to get out of your reserve duty is, above all else, money. The money is not insubstantial for someone of your pay grade. Go for what you can get now.

No money differential is worth the difference between wearing an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor and not. That's fine for the Army bubbas and all respect to them but it's not fine for me.

You are past the point in your life at which it is reasonable to set high goals for yourself.

You think the Army is any worse than the Marines? Look, I realize this goes against all the Marines propaganda they feed you but they are, when you get straight down to it, basically the same. The only difference is that one will take you and one won't.

Army infantry officers almost all go through Ranger School. They are sufficiently high speed for your taste.

After looking closer I see that there is no reasonable way to interpret your comment as being directed at me.

Doesn't matter what some expert said, the Marines are a cult.

There's a difference between a cult and esprit de corps. Every service has that, but the marines are especially good at it. This is not a bad thing. It's a positive attribute for a military organization.

I think Speer is pretty silly for sticking with this marine thing, but this is quite possibly the worst advice I've ever seen.

He needs to stick to here and now, small steps, manageable goals for the short term: getting employed (check), getting out of the ghetto (not check). If he wants to get into the military, he should do it in a way that doesn't interfere with other parts of his life by being a reservist (check) in a service that will take him sooner rather than later if at all (not check).
