Sweden has homelessness rates about the same as those of the United States. Around two or three per thousand people. They typically have the same problem we do - mental health.

*I am including crippling substance addiction as a mental health problem. If you want to separate addiction from other disorders, that's fine.

No. You said there wasn't a distinction between "the two". "The two" being specific types of ads I used to illustrate a specific principle. (There are obviously a lot more than just two types of ads.) Intelligent people can approach ads differently even if everyone is affected by ads to some varying extent.

Correct, it works on idiots all the time and everyone else a lot of the time.
It can't possibly work on a person all the time given mutually exclusive goals of various forms of concurrent advertising.

Some people are not affected much at all. Some have adverse reactions. You are using way too wide of a brush to paint people with to try to defend indefensible statements you have made.

You are apparently more likely to buy from a place that you perceive as not using manipulative advertising. That in itself can be an example of manipulative advertising.
Now you are back to a strawman. The argument isn't whether advertising is manipulative (in the "persuasive" sense, not the derogatory sense). The argument is whether there is significant difference between the effect on "intelligent" and "stupid" people. (Which there clearly is given how people react to advertising.)

No they aren't just giving out verifiable information, they're targeting a certain customer base in a certain way. The result may seem more ethical to you, and it may indeed produce a more honest advert, but it's still not them doing anything noble, they're just trying to get people to part with money.
You continually miss the point of the whole discussion. You keep falling back to a "but they want you to do something and are trying to convince you to do it" and missing the huge difference in how honest advertising and dishonest advertising are verified by intelligent consumers.

This whole conversation has reached the point where I can't actually remember why it started, what was originally said or why.
            Yes, that is obvious.

Given how dull I'm finding it, I can only imagine how bad it must be for those poor people who aren't even involved. I suggest we stop talking immediately, start drinking heavily, and think seriously about the bad things we've done here.
Or you could stop throwing up strawmen and we could simply discuss the salient point of whether or not there is variation across consumer's ability to verify claims made in advertising.

I thought Western European countries, Australia, and Japan have far lower poverty rate than United States.

                        • Norway has almost no poverty.

Poverty aside tho, I'm tired of hearing that inequality on its own isn't bad. After it reaches a certain level its pretty much always a bad thing. It creates a terrible effect on how people treat each other and class themselves in society when you can have a boss earning a thousand times as much as his employees.

Every city and county in my area has a Public Health Clinic, but the clinics long ago discharged their doctors. There are no private psychiatrists taking Medicaid recipients in the area. There is a Community Services Board in the city run as a charity. In this region charity is largley run by the congregation of Thomas Road Baptist Church. There is exactly one psychiatrist to treat all the poor in this region (two cities, four counties). That means in practice most folks get treated by their family practitioners.
Oh, and there's one dentist to treat all the poor in this area too.

                              • Similar story here, only that there is one psychiatric group that takes kids without insurance in the Central Ohio area, with a service area pop of 4 million, I think? And even that group has had to stop accepting new patients. And that's just for pediatric psych.

Our mental health system is an absolute ****ing wreck.
