I think it's BS.

Most of the 'muscle crew' at my gym seem to look and act like narcissistic and sexist wankers IMO. Not a good look and not likely to attract a woman who has even the tiniest iota of self-respect.

Of course that all sounds like yet another contributing factor to your lack of success in that department..

Yeah...it is also important to look after oneself though. I do try and look after myself and dress well but try not to overdo it. Everything in moderation.
