Europe is so open about its racism, it is amazing.

Make no mistake, we already have some representatives with some very ugly views; the two party system forces them to keep them mostly under wraps, however."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

Our multi-party system has wing-nuts who also are forced to fly under the radar.
It's because the electorate will punish wing-nuts who are too blatant or extreme.
I think it's the electorate, not the system necessarily. We get what we deserve politically.(\__/)

See that's a notable difference. In North America, sure, we have wingnuts, but they are ostracized, marginalized. It isn't sanctioned for them to speak out. It is universally understood that those views are wrong and they try to tone them down or keep it secret. It seems that in Europe the wingnuts feel comfortable enough about their views to show up at professional sport matches and wear their bigotry proudly. What is even more interesting is that their views are actually illegal in many/most European countries, whereas they aren't illegal here. Yet here those views are socially taboo, and that does a much better job of controlling them.Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012

In America, Trent Lott gets destroyed for suggesting he would have voted for a pro-segregation candidate in 1948, while toasting said candidate at his 100th birthday party.

In europe nutcases act stupid at football games and find it funny to beat up other teams supporters - in US the nutcases buys lots of guns and ammo and FBI has to start small wars to get rid of them.
In some european countries nazi speak aren't allowed, still they are seen at some football games - in US there are freedom of speech but those who dare to have wrong opinions are quelled by society.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Guns, on the other hand, are a culture here, and that is awesome.
