Am I the only one who thinks that putting people in prison for the sake of corporations' profits to be flawed?

Yes. Everyone else here thinks it's awesome. The idea that taking people out of the labor force through incarceration could increase corporate profits is startling.

The vast majority of people convicted of drug related offenses in prison are in prison for some other more serious crime.

A bigger problem is that our courts don't take crimes related to the illegal distribution of prescription controlled substances seriously enough. The number of people killed by illegally distributed prescription controlled drugs is more than 10 times the number killed by drugs that can't be legally prescribed. In fact if the rate of deaths from illegally distributed prescription controlled drugs continuse to grow at its current rate sometime within this decade it will exceed the number of gun related deaths.

Sometime ago I had a woiman in my office who had been getting Dilaudids from a pain clinic in another state. Her husband had been sentenced to 18 months after a teen died from ingesting the Dilaudid's he sold. The woman was completely shocked that her husband got such a long sentence.

No, here it's never due to "insufficient resources," it is due to idiot judges who think inmates shouldn't have to endure any real hardship. Poor little boo-boos, it's crowded in the prison! Waaaahh!

Living conditions in most prisons are pretty sweet and more akin to a barracks. 3 square meals a day, roof over your head, healthcare, entertainment (movies, tv, etc.), books, exercise, can go around and talk to other inmates, etc. You only don't have freedom. I think a lot of former inmates are better off in prison than on the street, especially if they try to survive legally.

These images were used to decry the crowded conditions in prisons but they give a good idea how how the typical inmate lives (ie- it's nothing like in the movies):

Looks like summer camp or boot-camp to me.

One guy who just got out after doing 2 years spent all his time watching movies (on his personal tv). I don't know if he watched DVD's or On Demand or what specifically but he saw thousands of movies over the 2 years there.

It's not a bad lifestyle if you're built for it and most people in prison don't have much, or many aspirations, on the outside anyway.

yes al, i can imagine why being locked up in a confined space with several thousand sex starved men would seem 'pretty sweet' to you.

Must not be only me considering how many people want to/don't mind going back. Recidivism.

Your friends and cousins are in prison. It's the hangout spot.

I don't think anyone actively wants to go to prison but do a lot of people have an attitude of 'ehh... it's cool' if they get caught? Definitely. For everyone that is in prison furious and punching the wall, there's another (usually young) who is a follower of the lifestyle.
