Sometime ago I had a woiman in my office who had been getting Dilaudids from a pain clinic in another state. Her husband had been sentenced to 18 months after a teen died from ingesting the Dilaudid's he sold. The woman was completely shocked that her husband got such a long sentence."I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!Comment

Living conditions in most prisons are pretty sweet and more akin to a barracks. 3 square meals a day, roof over your head, healthcare, entertainment (movies, tv, etc.), books, exercise, can go around and talk to other inmates, etc. You only don't have freedom. I think a lot of former inmates are better off in prison than on the street, especially if they try to survive legally.
These images were used to decry the crowded conditions in prisons but they give a good idea how how the typical inmate lives (ie- it's nothing like in the movies):

One guy who just got out after doing 2 years spent all his time watching movies (on his personal tv). I don't know if he watched DVD's or On Demand or what specifically but he saw thousands of movies over the 2 years there.

I don't think anyone actively wants to go to prison but do a lot of people have an attitude of 'ehh... it's cool' if they get caught? Definitely.
