It's about the same as Norway though when you put it in PPP terms and count things Euros get for free (like health care) some actually come out ahead. if you look at the gini coefficient, you can see how some countries redistribute wealth from the rich to the poor very effectively. germany and italy for example have a higher level of income inequality before taxes and transfers than the US but a much lower one after it.
