I'm sure you'll be a great engineer even iff you don't know something like the moons of Jupiter. Astronomy pretty much doesn't matter.

Since you can google something like which moons are the Galilean moons, it's true that the average Joe doesn't have to know those sorts of things. But having a sense of where you are in the universe (both in a historical sense and a geographic sense) is still quite valuable, even if not in a way that is easily articulated.
