  • I know a middle-aged man with a heart condition who can't work full-time because he'll lose his healthcare benefits.

That's an argument for both sides... maybe the maximum income for these benefits isn't low enough; maybe the social services system disincentivizes actual working by making people better off not working than working.

I have a friend who collected unemployment until his claim expired. As soon as it did, he immediately started working. The thing was his lost job paid him so much that he was better off with unemployment compensation than actually working a lower paid job and he took advantage of the system perfectly. When his 12 or 18 months or whatever it was came to pass, his vacation ended and he promptly started working.

Reg, guynemer thinks something you said is silly. Defer to his unstated opinion without explanation or be subject to further implied ridicule.

By the way: I think reg meant "healthcare", not "healthcare system", as I know from his comments in previous threads that he thinks the insurance system we use is bad.

      • Why are you criticizing Guy for something that you do yourself?

Did he take a lesser job or was his new job the equivalent of the one he lost?

Entitlements, what a loaded word. I'm saying with universal care we can actually have just as good if not better health care, cover all people, and pay less over all as a percentage of GDP and on a per person cost basis. It's simply a more efficient system.

              • Since Guy is a doctor working in the US health care system every day I'd take his opinions on the quality of the US health care system a bit more seriously than someone who has little to no experience with it.

I don't know. He went from landscaping to a manager of a gas station. I don't know which one paid more but I suspect he was getting paid more as a landscaper.

Then he didn't work the system. One of the purposes of unemployment checks is to help skilled workers remain in their field by giving them a window where they don't feel forced to find a job outside or below those skills. It's economically more efficient. However, your friend's failure to make the best of that opportunity is his own fault. I'm sure he thought he was being clever.

Read this and tell me why it's a poor argument. Nothing about Guy, specifically, but it's a poor train of thought.
