I give the support for my opinion with the second line.

It is true, some are perfectly happy to use LaTeX for all presentation needs. I think that Keynote/Powerpoint are better, and I think most independent observers would agree. I also see larger problems with linux (although be careful when changing pythons in OS X).

Personally, I find windows to be much more usable, even for programming. For me, the user interface of macs is counterintuitive and downright obnoxious. I don't mind having an SSH session open or running cygwin. It comes down to personal taste, Jon.

Also, the standard features on the Mac command line are just different enough from GNU to cause me some serious headaches, so when on Macs I tend to ssh to a linux or Solaris machine anyway.

Ick, cygwin is not well behaved.

Additionally, you do not always have access to the internet and it is useful to be able to work on your own computer.

It is true, I mostly work remotely (via SSH). However, my OS X machine (Lion right now) is much better behaved than my linux virtual box. And don't even mention putty.

Uh, PuTTY is great. I've used it extensively since I was a freshman in high school. Never been anything less than satisfied using it.

Cygwin also works fine for me. Again, we're deeply in opinion territory here.

Putty is great, I use it often, and use to use it all the time (when I need to do something from my mom's machine/etc).

You are extremely limited using it though.

(edit apparently there is X Server software you can use with putty, I haven't tried it... )

How are you limited? With screen and xming, I can do whatever I want on PuTTY. xming is limited of course to when I am on campus and have high enough bandwidth and low enough latency to run x11.

                  I haven't used xming.

Still, the issue with working locally. Cygwin is not the solution.

There is a reason why more and more scientists are switching to OS X for their personal machines.

HC, it's pretty sad if you can't see a joke even when it's kicking you in the ass

I have used vi/vim for the last 25 years or so - even used puch cards on an IBM mainframe, but never used ed.

In my last work place they bought us Macs when we asked for them.

My new work place gives us all Windows machines with Linux VM. Once I have some time, I intend to ask them to remove the Windows, as it just gets in the way and VMs are annoying. Everyone works within the VM (or just installs linux over it). Several of us who have tried OS X, wish we could be using that instead.

Cygwin is not functional enough for anyone doing development/analysis work to use it in my collaboration.
