  • It's common for self-employed to pay over $1000/mo for comprehensive healthcare for a family of 5, and still have pretty big deductibles.

Obviously increasing the size of the pool to be insured (and thus the bargaining power of the pool over an individual) decreases insurance costs.

Let me get this right - you can deduct healtcare insurance expenditures in your tax ? Or said in another way - you can pay insurance dividends through tax moneys ? If I get this rigth, then taxpayers are financing insurance shareholders lifestyle
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

      • I think the deductible is what you have to pay out of pay out of pocket when you get treatment.

I think that you have to edit that if you want it to make sense

The reason why health care is how it is in the US is because tax is not paid on the portion that is paid for health insurance by employers. Or something like that.

So employers pay for the vast majority of health insurance, like over 90%. And employees see health care costing them (if they have a good enough job to have this offered to them) less than 100 per month.

So yes, the atrocious health care system in the US is caused by an anti-capitalist subsidie for employer provided health insurance.

( I think it is also true that you can deduct medical expenses when individuals pay taxes, but that is generally after the portion which is covered by insurance. )
( Generally now days insurances don't cover everything. To be pretty safe you want to have 2-3 insurances, which you can have if both partners have good jobs. )

In an insurance policy, the deductible is the amount of expenses that must be paid out of pocket before an insurer will pay any expenses.

                • Ok, I might have misunderstood the word "deductible" - I thought it was about taxes, but according to gribblers link it's what you have to pay yourself before the insurance kicks in.

You are thinking of "tax deductible". Not the same.

And I know you're quite ignorant of American government and politics, so here's a little background for you on Obama's ignorance of the Supreme Court (or his feigned ignorance thereof):

Actually i didn't know Carville thought the same, but it is great that you consider one of Americas sharpest political consultants 'an idiot'. I'm sure if he read a few of your posts he'd be truly honoured to hear you think so.
