“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)
Which means what, exactly? Is this a critique of the low standards of public education, an exhortation to go church, not school, or something else entirely? At least it's not a double entendre.
If you're graded on a curve you just need to be better than everyone else and you'll get an A. They're saying that you're still not "good" even if you've done more good things than most people because God expects you to be perfect and will send everyone to hell because they're not perfect, oh but you just have to believe in Jesus and accept his sacrifice on the cross and you'll go to heaven instead. They're saying "God doesn't give a crap about your actions, Hitler would go to heaven if he accepted Jesus and repented for his sins right before he died while Gandhi is going to suffer for eternity because he wasn't a Christian. God grades on the cross, not the curve!"
