  • Church Signs

I pass a lot of churches on my drive to and from work - small ones, large ones, and ones with amusing signs. One church in particular has had two, uh, interesting signs out front recently.

    The first one:

Did no one at the church notice this could be taken more than one way, and that one of those ways promotes a very, uh, Catholic point of view? Perhaps they did, because the sign recently changed to:

Which means what, exactly? Is this a critique of the low standards of public education, an exhortation to go church, not school, or something else entirely? At least it's not a double entendre.

Anyone else seen noteworthy church signs? Anyone else have any idea what the church was trying to convey with these two messages?

I'm sure any kneeling reference is about praying but yes, it can be seen as something different.

I did a little googling and found out that my two phrases have been used before, which means that apparently many people in many churches find nothing wrong with the idea.

The first one's pretty obvious ("pray a lot") and I don't think they cared much about the way it could be construed to imply oral sex or what-have-you. The second one, I think, is more complex. Grading "on the curve" means that your test results are compared to the results of the rest of the class and adjusted against the average, no? But the NT says the standard we're called to is that of the cross; I think each of the four Gospels contains a line to the effect of "if you do not take up your cross and follow Me, you cannot be called my disciple." In other words, we shouldn't be concerned with how others are doing, or our progress relative to them (see: Publican and Pharisee, parable of). We are judged solely by the extent to which we follow, whether by violent martyrdom or through the course of our boring ho-hum day-to-day lives, Christ's ultimate example of self-sacrifice.

I don't like these kinds of cutesy signs, but the second is at least deeper than the first.

BTW, you guys are aware that there's a website out there to generate your own church signs, right? Chances are at least one of the ones you've posted is fake.

I'd say no, and don't be such a buzzkill.

Pity, obviously the famous chruch sign battle in this case must be fake (as it features 2 of the churhc signs, you can use at this page)
