Should children be compelled to finish high school?
I think they should finish high school. I don't think the pressure should be universally applied to students to go to college. There's a real need, also, for tradesmen. Actually, more of a need in this service orientated atmosphere that that's being shoved down American throats.
I'm still lobbying for a term of service to the country after high school. A sliding scale. Two years minimum for military, 4 for Peace Corps or other civilian service.

No, I want to live in a free society where the majority isn't constantly forcing you to do things for what it perceives to be your own good.
Children.

17-year-olds are barely children. Also, normally a child's parents are in charge, not the state. Why the hell should the government who doesn't even know the child be making the decisions?
Finishing high school is not the right choice for everyone. The government should not impose a particular choice. Requiring parental permission is reasonable.

No, but I think that all fees for trade schools should be covered by the state for anyone under 18 who enrolls. In other words, the state will pay them to train as hairdressers, mechanics, welders, etc.

We're not talking about college. There are enough things that people really and truly need that will occupy time spent in high school.
English alone is clearly in evidence here, among those who speak English as their native tongue. Too, to or two? Ugh... Were or where? DOH! Then or than? What?

Why? If the jobs they get are worth the education, they should be able to pay for it themselves.

Because the state, through taxes, would be paying for their education through high school anyway. I'm sure most states could work out a cheaper tuition rate than that offered to individuals by many community colleges. This way, the students will have marketable skills once they finish trade school. Dependant upon the course type, they may even opt to continue their education, on their own dime, later in life. This would be a cheap alternative. Or would you prefer them to collect welfare for the rest of their lives?

I think there are strong arguments in favour of compelling children to acquire an education, particularly reading, writing and arithmetic up to a standard that will allow them to have literacy and numeracy skills that will allow them to learn for themselves as and when their life circumstances require.
I do not think that all youngsters need to focus on academic learning. It may be highly desirable, for example, for a student with a practical bent to leave school before graduating to take up a trade, perhaps as a carpenter or mechanic.
