I read at something north of a thousand words a minute (depending on the material). It's pretty easy to get through a book in a couple of hours.

I was going to call BS on 16+ words per second but I noticed this:

Is 15 words (if you include a's and stuff). I used a stopwatch and yeah. Even with the presumed delay of stopping the stopwatch, it's ~1.5 seconds.

I digest stuff better, though, if I pause every chapter (or few paragraphs, depending on what it is) and run it back in my head by acting like I'm explaining it to someone.
