It's true. Imran's always going to be an outsider, no matter how much he defends slavery.

I never thought to really keep track of what I read last year. I did just finsish "The Soviet Quest for Economic Efficiency" by George Feiwel. I wanted to do a little research on what the then current thought was on Soviet Economic reform was ( book was written in 1967) and to see if their were any parallels to the reform that is permeating the US today. One could draw some interesting analysis between the crisis in the capital markets a couple of years ago and the way the state handled the distribution of fixed and working capital, but in general it is pretty clear that, while being over regulated now, the capital market system is definately not being remade in the Soviet model (i.e. we are not becoming "communist" in economic thought).

Next up will be something on Chinese economic reform of the 1980s. I am looking for a source that I trust.

Some nice titles on your list KH...might have to pick a couple of those for myself this year.

Only black people eat black eyed peas and collard greens for New Years? Maybe in Philly...

OMG, look at how poor and black those foods are:

Our recipes are for those looking to master the basics, the classics or the I’ve-never-cooked-this-before-but-really-want-to. We start with high quality foods to turn even the easiest weeknight meal into a creative, delicious expression. The kitchen is where we can stop to connect with the here and now, and bring recipes to life through our love of food.

Whole Foods, the supermarket of the ghetto, has a recipe for a soup involving both!

Are you cooking it with ham or bacon?

Neither - both out of cans. Had a ham sandwich yesterday so I think I'm covered on that .

My wife is from NW Florida, and totally white. She wouldn't dream of cooking greens without a pig bone/part in the pot, provided such were available. Al, get real.

(Lesson on how to eat Southern on New Year's day)

                      Imran...

1.) It is turnip greens for New Year's...not Collards
2.) Hog jowl is what is needed...not bacon or ham. (Use the jowl in both the black eyed peas and the greens)
3.) Cornbread is the bread of the day.

The hambone from the Christmas ham is an acceptable substitute for jowl in the peas, but you still need the jowl for the greens.

I don't know that she's that particular. Maybe she's from a different tradition. But she has told me, more than once, that most of our "black people's food" stereotypes are really about the food everyone in the South eats.

1.) this is the first I've ever heard turnip greens rather than collard greens - all of the markets on Atlanta bring out the collards and sell out of them quick. In addition:

                            The recipes are:

                            "Easy Black-eyed Peas
                            Southern-Style Collard Greens"

                            2 & 3) I don't feel like going through the effort.
