These are my favourite definitions of "Prius" from urbandictionary.

A small plastic means of transportation for tampons and other feminine product.
I think my period is coming on, quick find someone with a Prius.

Acronym for car made by Toyota that stands for Pass Right-side, I'm Unbearably Slow.

A hybrid car, which has an electric motor and a gasoline engine, and as a result, twice as many things to go wrong as a normal car. Bought for $27,000 by people who want to save money, who forget that someday, down the road, those batteries will need to be replaced and will cost over $5,000.

First, "abysmal" is patently inaccurate. 31/22 is a normal mileage rating for a car this size in the US.

Second, it's a car thread, so commentary on the car itself is actually expected and on topic. Even if overly harsh.

Mileage for 2011 midsize cars, 4-cylinder engines, automatic transmission
      Buick Regal, 2.4L -- 30/19
      Buick LaCrosse, 2.4L -- 30/19
      Chevrolet Malibu 2.4L -- 33/22
      Chrysler 200, 2.4L -- 30/21
      Ford Fusion, 2.5L -- 30/22
      Kia Optima, 2.4L -- 34/24
      Mazda6, 2.5L -- 31/22
      Mitsubishi Galant, 2.4L -- 30/24
      Nissan Altima, 2.5L -- 32/23
      Subaru Legacy, 2.5L -- 31/23
      Toyota Camry, 2.5: -- 32/22

My new car's mileage is quite typical.

$30K for a car isn't even close to absurd. If it is, you chose the wrong field to work in.

FWIW, I don't like extravagant cars. I work with people my age who make less than me and drive BMW 5-series cars. For some people it's about image.

I bought the Rav4 for winter driving, which your "$10K/10 year car" would likely fail miserably at up here.
        My day-to-day car is a 2004 Mazda 3...hardly extravagant.

Anyone who bought a Rav4 or Mazda6 for "dick-waving" is a monumental idiot.

For "dick-waving" cars, look at the gaudy and useless Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger, etc.
If you think 30 grand for a car isn't absurd, then you really are out of touch with the most of the world. And now you say you spent 30K and a second car? That is a massive waste.

And my 10k/10 car does work just fine 'up here'. Who cares is you go 10/mph in bad weather as long as you get where your going? If the roads are reasonably plowed, you should be able to get just about anywhere.

I'm not absolutely positive, but I think I prefer the Challenger to the Charger or Mustang.
I'd be driving down the road, waving my dick and I wouldn't care.

Among all the arguing about fuel economy, it's probably worth pointing out that US gallons aren't the same as UK gallons.

I don't live in most of the world. Why should I use third world countries or poor Americans as a barometer for everything?

And now you say you spent 30K and a second car? That is a massive waste.
                It's not, actually.

No, you don't get it. Your 2WD ****ty car (probably with bald tires, because extravagant winter tires are a waste, amiright?) wouldn't get out of the neighbourhood after a snowfall where I live.

I'm not sure what world you live in, but every street in the city cannot be plowed the minute after a massive snowdump. Your ****ty car probably also lacks very important safety features for icy roads like stability control, traction control, and probably even ABS. If half of the year is icey and snowy roads, it makes sense to have at least one vehicle per household that drives very safely on them.

You've no concept how the "rest of the world" actually works, do you?

As for the price, $30K isn't high for a car. In 5 years I can sell the car for $20,000 and get a new one. I'm paying $10,000 for 5 years instead of your $10,000 for 10 years, but you drive a ****box and I don't. Not to mention the maintenance costs of an older car vs one under warranty.

I just like how it looks. Looks like a Bentley.
