I have always made it clear that I do not oppose tar sands as much as a fossil fuels economy.

And this is actually the crux of it.

My view is that the wing-nuts are targetting the most likely to be effected aspect of oil. A major source in a liberal democracy where many people care at least somewhat what the rest of the world thinks.

It's a PR battle being waged by people who do not object to the oil sands so much as capitalism.
