  • Harvad Study: 1 American dies every 12 minutes due to treatable illnesses due to lack of insurance.

    We're so ****ed up as a society. We need universal single payer health insurance immediately.

    A 24-year-old Cincinnati father died from a tooth infection this week because he couldn't afford his medication, offering a sobering reminder of the importance of oral health and access to dental care.

    In other news, a 24 year old father in Cincinnati died the other day from a toothache. His life could have been saved with $27 in antibiotics but he didn't have health insurance so he died instead because he was unemployed. WTF?

      He didn't pay $27 (don't see the cite in the article though) for the antibiotics because he wanted the pain meds instead. He chose quick fix over cure.
      One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

          Hey, what if we had a law that makes everyone buy insurance?

            If you can't borrow $27 from friends or family to save your life then you were probably a massive douchebag.

              @OP:

              The "x people die of y every z amount of time" is a thoroughly idiotic statement. First of all, it makes it sound like people die on clockwork. Oop, another 12 minutes! Someone just kicked the bucket! That's wrong on so many levels. And second, it gives no sense of scale. Without knowing how many people total die per minute, it is literally meaningless. It's up there with "buy one get one free" and "the more you spend, the more you save" in terms of retarded quips you hear on the radio.

              And in reality, one person every twelve minutes actually sounds pretty darn good. Of course, it's impossible for me to tell without some kind of scale or comparison.
              If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

                  Death isn't hilarious, Oerdin is. Besides, why don't you just log off the internet if you never want to see anyone making light of something you find tragic?

                  "He laughed in an internet thread that is technically about death! What a misanthrope."

                    I found a figure of 107 Deaths Per Minute total in the US. One every 12 minute due to a lack of insurance would be 43,800 a year dying unnecessarily. Or about 14.5 9/11's if you prefer.

                      Well played! How dare I insinuate that somebody who has never paid for his own health insurance has no place mocking those without health insurance. Take the silver spoon out of your ass.

                        That's a much more compelling statement.

                          It's not that bad. For sense of scale, in 12 minutes ~55 Americans will die, on average. source
