How do we decide who gets education and who doesn't? Just look at the mess of the American system, HC got into to CMU.

I may be an idiot but my opinion is not based on any bias against another group of people. It's based on the human suffering and poverty that I see in the U.S. every day.
I am for immigration of persons with needed skills, money, education levels. But I'm also for educating and creating a workforce with the people who are already here. I don't feel that we should be importing a workforce when we have a high unemployment rate. I agree that some people are unwilling to work. That is a problem by itself. My solution would not be to just bring in people who are willing too work because then the unemployed become a problem for the system. i.e. crime and welfare increase. I don't think the U.S. is doing enough to motivate people to work and be productive. I don't think the U.S. is doing enough to educate people especially the youth on the opportunities that are available to them. I don't think the U.S. is doing enough to create jobs and education opportunities for the people already here.
An idiotic solution. I think most of the problems in America start in the school system or at least can be corrected there.
I would propose that education should be free through trade school or B.S. college as is your choice.
I would propose that students get way more hands on time looking at different career fields. Potentially some type of Apprenticeship program that brings in companies to train students in high school on entry level jobs for grades.
I would make government service mandatory for a minimum of two years after trade school or more if you obtained a B.S. degree. I would propose that this government service would normally be in the field that your education was in if possible. I would also propose that the government service would be used to improve U.S. infrastructure. This would give people a work background.
That would be part of my idiotic solution. I think that open immigration and/or a large unemployed workforce can bring about the destruction of a society. The romans had bread and circuses to keep their large unemployed population distracted. We now know that is only a short term solution. So once again the U.S. needs to figure out how to help U.S. citizens just as other countries should be trying to figure out how to help their citizens. The answer to a problem should almost never be to quit and leave.

BTW, I don't think I can save the world but I do try to save my little piece of it.

It's also based on ignoring the far greater human suffering and poverty outside of the US.

You're right. I feel that the responsibility of the U.S. government first and foremost should be looking out for U.S. citizens and their interests. Not multinational corporations, other countries or citizens of other countries.
I do think that the U.S. government/people should do their part on the world stage and work with these other groups but the primary focus should be the upliftment of the U.S. citizen. It does not make sense to me to let other people onto a boat that is sinking. We have to fix the holes first then think about rescuing other people are we all drown.
The other thing is that human suffering inside and outside the U.S. is a huge problem. The U.S. is not capable of saving the world. I am not capable of saving the world. So what can we as individuals do. I say look around you and see what you can fix and work on that. When we fix those things around us then let's see about helping others.
Another idiot idea that I have had for a long time. Kids in poor neighborhoods are exposed to a criminal element at an early age. They rarely come into contact with scientists, lawyers and etc..but they may know the local drug dealer personally and sometimes as early as 10 they try to take up the same profession that they have seen. I would propose a lunch program in which working professionals come to lunch with the kids. Sit at their tables and basically spur them to dream about what they could be. I think that a lot of kids would turn out different if they knew what their options were.

This is why you are a bad person.

I feel like my responsibility is to myself and my family. Why should I pay taxes etc. etc.

Kuci, he's right that the U.S. Government should look after Americans first. It's the purpose of the Government. However, he's wrong in his belief that immigration harms the American people. We get adults, ready to work and pay taxes, and we benefit from their economic contributions and consumption.
                        John Brown did nothing wrong.

Not all adults are ready to work and pay taxes. I'm all for mostly unrestricted immigration, but there do need to be a few guidelines to ensure we get productive members of society coming in. No old people, no kids, no Greeks, etc.

As long as those elderly aren't receiving Social Security checks or Medicare, I've got no beef. If Juan Sanchez want to bring his abuela to America, that's his business. He just has to be ready to provide for her.

You have beef, then, because that's not how Social Security and Medicare work.

Well then they need to be reformed. But I've always been in favor of entitlement reform.
