Good, it should, now get back to studying!
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I don't know. I imagine Princeton grads get good jobs.

To be fair, my attempts at the military screwed me by leaving me with no long-term plans and not staying in a job post-graduation more than a year. However, the $13/hour job (in which I was grossly underpaid, anyway) was going nowhere, so me staying there wouldn't have done me any good.

Unfortunately, because of military downsizing, I found out an hour ago, despite my best package buoyed by my highest PFT score ever, I was not selected for Active Duty Ground slot for the upcoming OCS class. I really wish I had applied as a reservist now because they took reservists but apparently only <30 AD Ground applicants east of the Mississippi, which is insane. Initial word is the Marine Corps is taking no AD Ground officers for the next fiscal year so I'd have to apply to be a reservist in the May 2012 class.

I first signed up in May 2008 and first swore in in August 2008. Four freaking years and I'm still not in. I'm pissed. My shins are great and I'm more ready than ever but the Marine Corps is not taking active-duty officers unless they're women or pilots.

If military service is so important to you why don't you try the Army or something? Are the Marines really so special that it's worth keeping yourself poor in an attempt to get in?

It probably doesn't reflect well on me to say it, but, yes.

All I can do now is just keep improving and tear it out of the frame when it comes time in May.

I don't give up. It is not in my character.

Dude, it's not about giving up. It's about moving on. You have better, brighter, more available opportunities you can reach for. Don't try to act like what you are doing has some moral or character background--it's just foolish stubbornness, not courageous perseverance.

                          • I dont think either of these guys sounded bright

I think government, up to a certain point, advances human liberty. Police, a judicial system and an army to prevent people from stealing stuff out of your car, out of your house, knocking you on your head or the Canadians coming over and invading the country," he said. "Those are actually mentioned in the Constitution and in the history of our country as legitimate things for our government to do and they make us freer, not less free. I am for limited government that does a limited number of things competently.
And I also said to him, 'Look would you be willing to sign a pledge where you're willing to forgo all the benefits that government provides? Are you willing to sign a pledge that says you don't want the U.S. military to protect you? That you will refuse to contact the police if somebody steals from you? That you will refuse to contact the fire department if your house is on fire? Because that's the equivalent!
