I'm told giardia is substantially worse--that it's like herpes of the intestines, it won't go away. Unless you take antibiotics strong enough to kill every damn thing in your guts, in which case you'll have exchanged one set of digestive problems for another. Apparently you have to "reseed" your intestines with new gut flora or something, which sounds unpleasant to me. But this is all secondhand from my wife--I have no idea how the hell she knows so much about it.Comment

I'm pretty sure you can get over giardia without treatment. (Though not advised.) I don't think you can get rid of the amoeba without treatment.
The amoeba responsible for amoebic dysentery can have wildly different effects. We made several midnight runs to the hospital because of it over the past two years. But for some people it doesn't bother them at all. If they break through the intestinal lining (bloody diarrhea) they can cause abscesses in your liver and other organs and need other medications to clean up on top of the stuff for your digestive tract.Comment
