According to Food and Water Watch, that plastic requires up to 47 million gallons of oil per year to produce. And while the plastic used to bottle beverages is of high quality and in demand by recyclers, over 80 percent of plastic bottles are simply thrown away."). It's a despicable industry beyond niche purposes (like for consumption in third world countries).
I like filling landfills with plastic. After we're wiped out there will be something to inform future intelligent lifeforms that we were here

When I was in the Navy I started drinking bottled water because
        1. I was able to see the process of making water on a ship and on a sub.
        2. I noticed that water in Atlanta, subs, ships, Ca, Va, Ct, Tx, Ms, Fl, PR and Cuba all tasted different which made me paranoid about drinking tap water.

It's just random harmless minerals. "Mineral Water" actually advertises these impurities as an advantage.

I buy it when I'm travelling and unsure of the water sources. I've drunk tap water thoughout Europe, North America and Istanbul. In rural Ukraine, I drank tea and bottled water.

The thing that bugs me most about bottle water as a main means of water consumption is that there are so many other people around the world that don't have access to clean water and here we are paying absurd dollars for it.

Once we replace all water with Gatorade, we won't have these problems anymore.

As others have pointed out, down here bottled water is crucial and generally rather cheap. No Brita filters here. Er, not that I'd trust a Brita filter to remove giardia anyway.

In most developed countries bottled water is indeed bullcrap. And yes, it does come from public water sources. What you pay for is marketing, distribution, and a hefty premium.

That being said, here in Spain tap water tastes terrible. I´m sure it´s sufficiently good and stuff, but in comparison with Dutch or English water it´s booboo. As such, I either buy these 8 liter containers, or carbon-filter and carbonize it to disguise the bad taste.
