And the rest of it was mainly done by the British! And Andrew Jackson.

Our guns just randomly went off while pointed at those natives!! Not our fault“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

The deaths and desertions in the Army's boat detachments caused Gen Scott to suspend the Army's Removal efforts, and the remaining Cherokees were put into eleven internment camps, mostly located near Ross' Landing (now Chattanooga, TN) and at Red Clay, Bedwell Springs, Chatata, Mouse Creek, Rattlesnake Springs, Chestooe, and Calhoun (site of the former Cherokee Agency) located within Bradley County, TN and one camp (Fort Payne) in Alabama.
Cherokees remained in the camps during the summer of 1838 and were plagued by dysentery and other illnesses, which led to 353 deaths. A group of Cherokees petitioned General Scott for a delay until cooler weather made the journey less hazardous. This was granted; meanwhile Chief Ross, finally accepting defeat, managed to have the remainder of the removal turned over to the supervision of the Cherokee Council. Although there were some objections within the U.S. government because of the additional cost, General Scott awarded a contract for removing the remaining 11,000 Cherokees under the supervision of Principal Chief Ross, with expenses to be paid by the Army.

They were used in the Philippine-American war too, pretty much simultaneously with the Boer War. I did some reading on that for a prospective article some years back, but it got too depressing. The genesis of the "evil Finn" concept- Evil, evil Finland

To the best of my knowledge, there weren't many Dutch farmers in the Philippines at the time. They weren't mentioned in the books I read, anyway. The genesis of the "evil Finn" concept- Evil, evil Finland

I took your previous post to mean that you had been reading about the Philippine insurgency and the Boer War and were depressed by the means by which both were fought. My bad; I should have known that a good Englishman would never be depressed by the conduct of wars fought for the glory of the Empire.

As scholars have long been aware, the American military was deeply concerned about the power of Soviet conventional forces in the 1945-1950 period.
From 1945 on, the realization that the United States was unprepared to counter soviet conventional forces shaped military strategy.
Basically the article points out that US forces were the only thing stopping the Soviets from rolling in, but because of our demobilization, if we hadn't had nukes, they might have tried it anyway.
I don't believe the Reds want a war. What can they gain now by armed conflict ? They've gained just about all they can assimilate.Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.
