All tourists are awful, incompetent boobs who deserve being locked up in third world prisons for being where they don't belong.

But still significantly higher than France, Italy, Spain and other mediterranean countries. I think one of the big reasons for that is the vast majority of movies are not dubbed unlike other countries.

Try speaking your just learned words of Dutch in Amsterdam or The Hague or Leiden. I made a special effort to pronounce the address of the Dutch East India captain's house in Achtergracht correctly, only for the taxi driver to say 'right mate'.

They watch far too much B.B.C. . Only once was I addressed in Dutch, and that was by a German.

In France, I was asked 2-3 times if I was German.

It's called broadening your horizons, and the world would be a better place if more people did it.

With respect to the French - I've traveled in a few* European countries and I'd say the French made the least effort to bridge the language divide. My tactic was to start out with English and when they didn't respond I would switch to my Grade 12 level French, at which point they'd respond in English so that they wouldn't have to hear me brutalize their language.

I have been abroad where it seemed being American was advantageous since Americans have the reputation of being better tippers than Euros.

Being American was very advantageous in Israel. The only downside was people constantly tried to rip us off because they thought we were gullible noobs. But airport security is really quick in Israel if you're an American.
