I don't understand why Quebeckers and Frenchmen would pretend not to know English. That just strikes me as stupid.

Why do people who don't speak English go on vacations to countries whose language they don't know?

In the case of the Quebeckers it's because they're terrible human beings.
HTML is disabled in signatures

My comment can be equally applied to any Anglo-speaking country, it only happened to reference an American because there are more of them. One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

I witnessed many frenchmen pretending not to know English the last time I was in France. Once my companion would speak to them in Italian and make them comfortable, they mysteriously would understand my english. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. i was on a bus the other day and a guy (i'm fairly sure he was an american) got on outside a hotel. he had trouble paying the fare, which was written in big letters above the conductors seat. the conductor tried to explain to him what the problem was, which left the chap very confused searching for something to say, until he mumbled 'no speak'. the conductor pointed at the big sign with the fare on and the chap eventually produced a note to pay, which the conductor couldn't change. at this point, i decided to help out and changed the guy's note for him and he was able to pass the turnstile. he then thanked me in terrible spanish!
this kind of thing happens all the time. i do wonder why people don't bother to at least learn a few simple words and phrases when travelling, a little effort can go a long way."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

He sounds a bit French, therefore, what does he know? But seriously, I am normally able to get by because I do know a few bits of the language, albeit very little. I studied French at school, not German. Stupid, as the language that would be really useful to me now is German. Doh!
