  • Do You Think in English?

This is obviously a question for the non-native speaker.

Do you catch yourself sometimes thinking in English,
or is it only possible to think in native tongue and
    translate as needed?

i think a lot in portuguese these days, moreso when i'm talking to people, although sometimes when alone too.

I sometimes catch myself thinking in Visayan now. Only about vegetables and the weather though...

What if you only think in your unconscious mind? How would you know what language you use? It could be Chinese.

Any language I can express myself in will do, so yeah, English is one of them.

sure... you just need to be somewhere long enough to start thinking in that language too... it is also interesting to think about different ways of expression for the "same" reality, some meanings are better defined in one language than the other...

I bet that for more than bi-lingual people it takes conscious effort to switch from one to the next and not mix up too much...

I used to be able to think in German a bit, but I was really stupid in German because I knew so few words. And I can't really do that any more.
