If interstellar flight were somehow discovered to be more than a pipe dream, a moon colony could be useful for manufacturing the ship, I guess. However, barring some absolutely incredible discoveries from that apparent fluke of a neutrino experiment, we're limited by the speed of light. So yeah, moon bases are worthless.

So your idea is to spend trillions of dollars of taxpayer money to build a manufacturing facility on the moon, and to then spend trillions of dollars of taxpayer money to ship all of the raw materials for a spaceship up to the moon, all with the intention of building a Big Spaceship, in order to accomplish... what?

And you call yourself a fiscal conservative

Damn those navel gazing leftists who want to tax people to pay for repairing structurally deficient bridges and think government sponsored research should be aimed at our energy needs. If only they'd come up with something far more expensive and far less useful.

But, that's 'progressives' for you. Can't see the **** forests for the trees.
Here's my awesome science idea: let's build a colony on one of Jupiter's moons so that we can siphon deuterium off of Jupiter and send it back to Earth to power fusion reactors.

Wait, what do you mean my idea is stupid/infeasible??? You can't see the forest for the trees. That's 'Catholics' for you.

Why settle for spending millions on bridges to nowhere when we can invest trillions in building a city on the moon that can construct and launch massive spaceships to nowhere?

So crazy it just might work. We get donations from the tea party to build a moonbase then use the money for healthcare, education and infrastructure. Then we show them pictures of the base. Charge them for flights to the "moonbase", take them to the arizona desert at and let them walk around in "mock spacesuits" at night.
              When they ask questions..
              Where's the Earth?
We're on the Dark side of the moon silly.
Hey, I thought the moon did'nt have atmosphere.
              Oh that's the lunar wind..
What's that thing that looks like the moon.
              That's the moons moon.

But it would have been a very large dick that USasians could wave proudly - they need such to feel superior
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                        • Good. Should keep them busy for a while.

I really hope they find my version of the Higgs:

                          1) I will be famous
                          2) It will take at least 5 years to find it, guaranteeing that I am no longer easily replaceable by the disenchanted physicists
                          3) It is a totally ******* extension to the SM that is absolutely uninteresting in every way other than the fact that it makes the Higgs hard to find at proton colliders
