They were a huge influence for my old guitarist / songwriter colleague with whom I played in bands on and off for nearly 20 years. I preferred the early stuff personally. I don't begrudge a band for turning music into commerce, but Shiny Happy People was the low watermark.Last edited by Cort Haus; September 22, 2011, 13:46.

Well damn...
R.E.M. were really the first band I started listening to...no music had really gained my attention that much before then. Not really been into the more recent stuff but their earlier stuff is something I will listen to forever...and although Shiny Happy People was not everyone's cup of tea most of their output was still great...look at New Adventures In Hi Fi which was a relatively late album but one of their best.Speaking of Erith:
