      • Is that a kid with down syndrome holding the money he got from winning an event in the special olympics?

                Greek ex-minister interview. Smart guy.

                - don´t send us more loans, unless we can demonstrate actual improvements
                - we should not be lowering bureaucratic salaries, we should be firing them. it´s an inefficient system and we could do without 3 out of 4 if properly organized.
                - we should sell land and inventory, like those planes we impounded that are now rusting away in a hangar.

                • Several of the BBC's experts are saying Greece won't meet the EU's requirements for getting the next installment of bailout money, that Greece is almost positively going to get kicked out of the Euro zone, and that French banks are going to get wiped out unless the French government comes up with a bailout by the end of the month. That is unless Germany wants to just keep giving the Greeks money without the Greeks doing the cuts and privatizations they said they would do in order to get the money.

                  • i understand that while it's possible (though very difficult) for a country to unilaterally leave the EU, it's pretty much impossible for a country to be thrown out. it's good that a greek exit from the euro is finally being talked about openly, but it's akin to starting to talk about the oncoming train seconds before it crushes you.

the whole thing has gone beyond farce. it's a study of what happens when you set unrealistic targets based on figures that don't add up. the sheer incompetance of the EU/ECB/greek government/IMF in the whole affair is breathtaking. everyone involved should be taken outside and shot.

                      • My question is if Greece is in such bad economic shape why did they increase spending this year by about 8% over last year and increase the deficit by around 12%? Obviously they think they don't have to do anything and they'll just keep getting free money.

                        • where did you get those figures from oerdin? also any increase in deficit spending might have something to do with the collapse of the greek economy, tax revenues etc...

                          • Greece out of the Euro. Do it now. As in tonight. Suspend bank withdrawals until you can print up some drachmas. Redenominate sovereign and private debts. **** the Euro banks who are still marking Greek debt at 79 cents on the dollar. It's better for everybody (other than aforementioned banks)

                            • the tragedy of it is that it could have been so much better if a sensible policy had been implmented before the first bailout. an orderly exit from the euro and a moderate haircut on the debts 18 months ago would have put greece in a much better position going forward.

instead greece, its people and in fact, european taxpayers in general were screwed in order to save the euro and european banks. i wonder if enough time has been bought to save the insolvent european banking system ( )...
