  • Why do I feel bad for the Spaniards, but not the Greeks?

Let's face it: both countries are ****ed because they are stuck inside the same currency union with the Germans et al (and conversely the Germans are ****ed because blah blah blah)

Yet somehow I feel as though the Spaniards are victims of circumstance while the Greeks are devious ****ers who never had any plan to pay back the enormous debts they were running and who took full advantage of the implicit guarantees of a currency union.

Perhaps it's just seeing the response of the public: in Spain (and Ireland) people are rationally dealing with the hole they're in. In Greece they're busy burning ****ing tellers alive at work.

That's incredibly pathetic. Greece is entitlement culture at its very apex.

We've always known that the Greeks are vile little creatures.

you´re too kind KH. remember, spain was a ****hole, very slowly recovering from a civil war and dictatorship, as of 1975ish.

mainly due to european investments in infrastructure were the locals able to become more prosperous again. there weren´t any proper highways when i first came here. that moneytap is now drying up, as it´s now directed at eastern europe.

the mentality in spain is still viva la vida and enjoy life, as opposed to let´s invest in the future. things might be significantly better here than in greece, but the big whoop will come here as well.

I don't trust a damn thing zoe says. He might be absolutely right here, but I'm ignoring him nonetheless.

I feel bad for both of them, having to deal with the hordes of pasty English scum invading their country on holiday.

Spain has much lower government indebtedness than Greece, but investors are still not buying their bonds. And there is an ongoing housing bust (the mortgages are recourse loans there). It doesn't seem fair, but it should be a wake-up call to governments that high indebtedness can get you into trouble very fast.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

If you drink too much ouzo, you end up under the table; if you drink to much Sangria, you end up under a senorita.
It makes Spaniards far more compelling.

I feel they're rats and should already leave the sinking boat. Spain I feel is more innocent though.

Government spending, corruption, just no ends in sight for the ridiculous use of money and benefits. And at the same time financially responsible people gets to pay for it. Let's face it, the few countries in EU that are sort of doing what they're supposed to do - save for the future, invest for tomorrow, cut and decrease spending - are getting raped. What's really sad is that it doesn't matter. Greece is still going down the toilet. I wish this money would save them but it doesn't. The young Greeks will pay for it in terms of horrible economy, no jobs, who knows what they come up with but everyone will be raped except corrupted fat *******s who should be shot in the face until they die of death.

And it's not just Greece, it's all interconnected, we're all screwed up, corrupted, fat slobs. I don't know why we put up with it. That's exactly what we do, we put up with it.

Spreads on Spanish bonds were still manageable the last time I checked (~400bp CDS IIRC)

Greek people are better than Spaniards. Take a trip to Greece and see for yourself.
