During the world wars, it was German. But they are supposed to be a very good car. In fact I had one as a hire car. The best ones I had were that and the A4. Not too impressed by the Vectra though.
Ford was German? I must have missed something, or are Mondeos not Ford?
Perhaps you are getting confused with Ferdinand Porsche, who was Austrian.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
Mondeos are made in Belgium, but yes, they're Ford. I think that the initial models were heavily based on Volvo designs, but I'm not sure if that has continued. I'm not aware of the particular quality of the Belgium plant.

I have a 13 year old mondeo build at that plant - owned it for a little over five years and are quite satisfied with it. Last winter where we had long periods with minus 15-20 degrees it started every morning, nothing is rattling around or saying strange noises, easily reaches 170 km/t (unofficialy of course ) There has started some minor rusting at the rear wheelcasings, but that is to be expexted on a 13 y.o. car. Last time it was at those biannual securitychecks we have, all that was wrong was a parking light bulb.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
My father's diesel 1999 Brazilian-made Fiesta (the first car I drove on a regular basis) could manage 170 (I did need over a km to reach that speed though ).
In any case, most of the Fords over here are made either locally or in Brazil, and we didn't service many of those when I worked at a mechanic's shop (we mostly did Audi and VW), so I can't say much about them.

Sure, my father had a 71 ford capri 1600 that also did 170 shaking and rattling. My mondeo does it at 2/3 throttle and some 2000 rpms left before the red field
Considering traffic, police and roads here, I'm not really interested testing how high I can go

If you don't mind about image, and just want a car to get you from A to be, look for a new Hyundai i10. It's only a 1.2 litre but it's solid for getting around town in, decent on the motorway, really cheap road tax, and cheap to run. I'm perfectly happy with mine, even though I much prefer the Punto from the PoV of how fun it is to drive.
The i10 sells for about £7k, but you can get them cheaper than that for the basic version if you shop around (comes with air con as standard ffs, in a 7K car!), and you get a 5 year warranty, and road side assistance.
If you just want something comfortable, get a Polo or A1

We get raped for tax, but you get the full anal penetration over in Scandinavia
True, and they don't even use lubricant when the do it Though, our health care and SS at least works

Decide on the make you like. Go to a dealership and ask the sales manager what he is driving. Then buy his car. Not a same-make-and-model, but his actual car. Chances are very good that its top-of-the-line, in next to mint condition, and has a full warranty. It will likely have very low milage and have all of the 'bugs' worked out. If you negotiate correctly, you will save a bundle off new, and end up with a shiney new 'broken in' car.
There's nothing wrong with the dream, my friend, the problem lies with the dreamer.
Come to think about it - there were this "job change" TV series, and one of them was a vicar that should learn to become a used car salesman - actually, I don't understand how you dare to buy a used car

Because in my scenario, you are buying the best car on the lot, if you are dealing with a lot that primarily deals in used cars, or a low milage, top of the line demo that is probably less than a year & has full factory warranty if you are dealing with a new car dealership.
I've done the latter 3x, and had 3 largely maintainance free cars.
Besides, Provost is a Yorkshireman. He could probably build a car in his shed, if he had the time.

Shall I make him an offer he can't refuse? Well if I do it, I should be able to buy cash...and that's a lot of cash...hopefully I can get a trade in for my old car. But I am still figuring out whether it is even worth me getting another car yet.

Well, I'd actually give good thought to if I needed a car, because hiring a car for the 4 weeks of a year you actually need one is a hell of a lot cheaper than spending 20K on a status symbol. So Understanding what a new i10 would offer you is at least useful for a comparison. A high spec Polo or i10 will set you back about twice as much as an i10, but the residuals also need considering - the i10 residuals are not bad, 55% or so, partly because of the ****ed up scrappage scheme Brown set up (the bastard).
But yeah, £7K for buying an i10. I know you are a bit on the short side, but there is head room.
