Assume a DVD costs twenty bucks retail and that the retailer spends five bucks for the DVD. Pirating a DVD means that the retailer is hypothetically out twenty bucks, shoplifting a DVD means that the retailer is concretely out five bucks and hypothetically out an additional twenty bucks. In addition, there is an X% chance (say, 10%) that somebody who pirates a DVD will later buy it (I dunno, to get the DVD extras or whatever). There is a 0% chance that somebody who shoplifts a DVD will later buy the DVD.<p style="font-size:1024px">HTML is disabled in signatures </p>

What is the difference between dine-and-dashing and not eating at the restaurant in the first place.
What is the difference between pumping gas without paying and taking the bus.
What is the difference between hijacking an airplane to divert it to Latvia, as opposed to buying a plane ticket to Latvia.<p style="font-size:1024px">HTML is disabled in signatures </p>

If I had been a better shoplifter, I might not have gotten caught until I was in my 20's and DVDs were out... then it's possible I would have had to buy a shoplifted DVD instead of the bubble gum.

Additionally, shoplifting will get employees fired if they let enough of it through. No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
