  • No-one should be put off going to university for financial reasons (£60k)

Undergraduates enrolling on courses in England – where costs are higher than elsewhere in the UK – can expect to owe £59,100 when degrees finish, it was revealed.

Debt levels will be fuelled by a dramatic hike in tuition fees for students starting courses in 2012.

According to figures, the overall cost of a degree course – including fees, equipment, rent and living expenses – is expected to almost double under the new student finance regime.

By comparison, students starting courses this autumn can expect to owe £26,100.
    .
Researchers found that student debt in Scotland, where tuition is free, was around half that of the rest of the UK.

Scotland can afford it but England cannot... SNP should start the UK offensive offering in England what Labour and Lib Cons cannot... get out of the wars, remove the tuition fees, pretty good agenda.

    *daily mail warning*

Scotland is planning a new anti-English 'tax' to make it harder for students south of the border to escape soaring tuition fees.

The Scottish Nationalist government is looking at plans to raise fees for English undergraduates to bring them into line with average charges in England following reforms being brought in by the coalition.

But for Scottish students - and anyone coming in from Europe - the fees will be paid for by the taxpayer.

It is yet another example of the 'apartheid' which sees Scottish residents getting better services than those in England - despite paying far less per head in tax.

I think it is tough for younger people nowadays. When I went to university there were no stupid fees, just a loan for part of my maintenance which is now paid off, and it wasn't an unmanageable burden.

Anyway, why are we trying to put so many people through university doing stupid courses? Some of them are neither suitably academic nor practical to be of any use. Womens studies? I mean, I study women all the time and I don't get a degree for it

I agree, student loans should be freely available.

You need a passing score on the final.

Holy ****. I had to pay only $9000 for my degree and $4000 of that was from a 9th semester not covered by scholarship, Pell grant, etc.

                9th semester?

                With any luck I won't even need a 7th.

Government: The Maximum Tuition fees universities can charge will be £9000 a year, but we expect only a few top universities will charge that.
All Universities: WOO HOO! We can £9000 a year! We'll do that.
Government: Buh... buh.... but... that's not what we meant.
All Universities: Tough! We're following your rules!
Government: Oh. ****. I don't think our loans set up can handle all of you doing that. What a bunch of useless retards we are. Again.

I may have to do an extra year of college to get a dual-degree. Not sure. Depends on how quick I can transfer programs.

To do a graduate track Physics degree and a Maths degree, I needed 4 years. If I wanted to just get done, I could have done it in 3.

I don't think such is really that useful though, I think that to really get a benefit from college now you want internships or pre-graduate. (Semester long) Internships will often put you over 4 years.
