  • Is professional sport a bad thing? (Serious thread)

Has over-competitiveness and professionalism in sport ruined the experience for both fans and players, asks Dominic Hobson.

Sport is war - it is about the loss, as well as the gain. We abbreviate Orwell on the subject.
"Sport," he wrote in 1945, "is war minus the shooting." Few bother with the passage which precedes this phrase.
Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence”

If there weren't sports to sublimate the rage that builds inside me day after day after day, you'd be reading about a young doctor who went up into a clock tower in Ohio.

Pro "sports" are just wussified Colosseum games.

Bring back the classic matchups. Net and trident vs gladius and shield.

Seriously, can you just imagine how bat**** ****ing evil insane Canadians would be if they didn't have hockey?

It's the only thing keeping them from skating south across the border and bashing our brains in.

Yikes. They had throat cuttings during intervals, to keep the crowd entertained between bouts.

The lions were well fed though.

                    The Romans had *real* entertainment.

                    Not this wussie modern crap.

Screw it. Hockey isn't enough anymore.

I have always liked tennis since I was a kid because for me when I was a kid it was the closest thing to two men fighting throwing laser beams from their hands ,

I also think it is the sport with the most great points per match, and the fact that you have to win, close out the match, in order to win, that you just can't wait for the clock to save you, creates a lot of drama, because of all the chokings and psychological issues. And with time you end up understanding the subtleties, the spins, weaknesses, different grips and playing styles.
I like the fact that it is individual and international, so that you can end up being the fan of a slovak or a russian, you don't have to follow a team, to belong to a tribe. And you can like players for fickle reasons, because of how cleanly someone hits the ball, or because you like his forehand swing.

I also like boxing (for similar reasons to my liking of tennis) and volley (only group sport I like, indoor, not the beach one)
                      I need a foot massage

This theory doesn't explain the popularity of women's beach volleyball at all.

The only harm it causes is injuries to players and the occasional riots, and riots aren't likely unless you're a retarded British Columbian. So I'd say it's not a bad thing.

                            Bewbs. Big, bouncy bewbs.

Beach volleyball isn't really a sport, it's just an (excellent) excuse to watch big, bouncy bewbs.

Cricket should be the only legal sport - what other game gives the opportunity to eat cucumber sandwiches, drinking tea and act civilized while having fun
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
