And to be fair a water cannon would've been completely useless in Manchester. It's not like a dense wall of rioters, just little ***** running and riding around who could've just moved out of the way. Look at the video Laz posted for an example. It wasn't like this huge mob descended on the city, just a few bands of criminals...Speaking of Erith:

Huh? Police custody cells are very small, and designed for 1 prisoner.
The question isn't so much about looter comfort as it is about the maximum number of prisoners the staff at the police holding cells can safely manage (both the officers safety and the safety of offenders).Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

It's easy to say "this is what should have happened" if you don't bother to think about the practical realities of what that means.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

I am quite happy to support the following positions:
- Police use of lethal force when there is a clear threat to life (our current standard) is the right standard to hold.
- Police use of lethal force where there is no threat to life is just summary execution
- Execution is wrong
- Summary Execution without trial is even wronger
- Summary Execution for offences such as theft and vandalism is utterly ludicrous, so wrong that wrongerererer isn't a good enough term
A case where someone is about to commit an arson which is highly likely to cause loss of life is a case of #1 and I think current police powers would apply.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

Well, as it turns out Ann Coulter has the solution to this mess:

A few well-placed rifle rounds, and the rioting would end in an instant. A more sustained attack on the rampaging mob might save England from itself, finally removing shaved-head, drunken parasites from the benefits rolls that Britain can't find the will to abolish on moral or utilitarian grounds. We can be sure there's no danger of killing off the next Winston Churchill or Edmund Burke in these crowds.

Just curious, but it seems like there have been 5 dead in these riots - none by guns. Anyone that knows how many there have been killed by guns in the same period in US ?With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
