I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Nice to see yankees having humouristic sense - if that pic had been american style, then it would have been white hut, obama speaking and republicans robbing just like they did a couple of days agoWith or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

World leaders condemn british brutality against peaceful demonstrators link :
Iran and Libya are chastising Britain over its handling of ongoing riots that have swept through London and other major British cities.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad condemned what he called Britain's “savage” treatment of peaceful protesters. He also told reporters in Tehran Wednesday the British government needs to listen to the demands of the people who have become frustrated.
An official with the government of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi also criticized Britain Wednesday.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Khalid Ka'im told the official Jana news agency that British Prime Minister David Cameron has lost his legitimacy and must step down.
Britain was a leading critic of Iran's treatment of protesters following the disputed June 2009 election that kept Mr. Ahmadinejad in office.
British forces have also played a key role in the NATO campaign in Libya, which started after Mr. Gadhafi's government turned on ant-government protesters earlier this year. With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Ahh, the good old days when the Riot Act actually meant something... Like hanging or transportation to the colonies.

Magistrates sat through the night in London to deal with more than 100 cases.
Among the offenders who have already walked free was 18-year-old David Attoh, who was arrested in Hackney with two Burberry T-shirts. He admitted theft and was told by a magistrate at Highbury that the two days he had spent in cells should serve as his punishment.
The magistrate told him: "Don't get in trouble again. You have a bright future."

Same punishment a first offence shoplifter would get, and the crime is the same?
It's the nature of this that the more petty crimes are being sentenced first, the more serious crimes have to be referred to crown court where more severe penalties can be used.
Nice article on the importance of independent judiciary and following procedure.

What is going on with Birmingham Children's Hospital?
Riots separate parents from dying baby
August 11, 2011, 9:04 pm
It's every parent's nightmare - being separated from your child while they're desperately fighting for their life.
That's what happened to parents Chris and Julie Bryon-Edmond, as rioters prevented them from reaching their newborn baby in hospital, the Daily Mail reported.
The parents could not reach their sick child as looters had threatened to storm the Birmingham Children's Hospital and fire bomb the building.
Police ordered a total lockdown of the facility, as brave staff members blocked the doors.
One month old Lottie, who was born several weeks premature, requires a liver or she will die within the next few weeks.
She is suffering from the rare condition neonatal haemochromatosis, which saw toxic levels of iron build up in her liver while she was still in her mother's womb.
She desperately needs a liver transplant, and has been placed at the top of the UK's super transplant list.
Her parents can't donate theirs because she is so small, and requires a child liver.
The family took aim at rioters who called for others to storm the hospital on Monday night, telling them to "come and see the cost of their selfishness".
"It is an unbelievable rollercoaster of emotions, it's ghastly," father Chris said.
‘Every moment, Julie and I have a moment of euphoria that Lottie hasn't died despite being one of the most critically ill babies in the country.
"Knowing that a child must die to save our Lottie is hard. It seems obscene that, in a population of 60 million people, there are so many waiting for a transplant."
Julie admits to feeling helpless at their desperate situation.
She said: "We are on a knife edge. She only really has a month to find a liver and it is out of our control.
"It may be too late for us,’ said Julie who has launched a campaign to get an extra one million people signed up as transplant donors."No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

BIRMINGHAM Children’s Hospital bosses have hit out at “nonsense” circulating on the internet over youths attacking the wards.
Rob Checketts, head of communications at the hospital, in Steelhouse Lane, city centre, said that there was no truth in reports on Twitter and Facebook that rioters had entered the hospital.
“It is utter nonsense which is only helping to unnecessarily frighten parents and the children we treat,” said Mr Checketts.
“The lies are growing out of control.
“There is even a Facebook site with 4,000 members called ‘Rioters Attacking Birmingham Children’s Hospital Make Me Sick’,” he added.
“It is a real shame when there are clearly a lot of disturbances and trouble taking place in Birmingham and people are making things like this up.
“No-one has attacked the hospital, set fire to it or even come into it.
“We have had no trouble at all.
“We continue to provide a normal service to all our young patients and want people to stop making up these things.
“It is a whole lot of nonsense and want the public to realise that and not take any notice of it.”
Rumours started being tweeted on Monday night and within an hour had escalated to the surprise of staff and managers.
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is located opposite Steelhouse Lane Police Station, in the centre of the city
