  • Leaving Afghanistan

I recently saw clips of Sec Gates & Sen John McCain telling us we cant leave Afghanistan too soon because 9/11 was the resulting failure of our leaving Afghanistan earlier, I guess after the Russians pulled out...

So, we were attacked on 9/11 because we didn't occupy Afghanistan after the Russians ended their occupation?

I've heard plenty of pundits claim Gates is sharp - but thats crazy! Well, their point is we didn't fill "the void" in Afghanistan (I guess by nation building) after the Russians pulled out, but instead we supposedly ignored Afghanistan and that allowed Al Qaeda to set up shop (we never gave our blessings to SA/Pak to establish the Taliban?).

But thats still crazy! Al Qaeda can set up shop in many places with or without "states" in place. We gotta stay in Afghanistan (for how long?) so Al Qaeda wont move back in? I want them to move back in, they cant hide as easily - they need established states for protection. Who will protect Al Qaeda in Afghanistan from our missiles?

    Does Gates make any sense?

I'd sooner accept humanitarian reasons, the Taliban have proven themselves undeserving of any authority over other peoples...

    Following Canada's lead yet again.

I like how the US was begging Canada to stay not a few months ago, now they're shrugging and leaving as well. Classy.

Gates is a really smart guy. He's not a neocon, either. You've completely misunderstood him, Berz, he's talking about the fact that we didn't pay attention to threats from that part of the world and we can't just pretend they will disappear should we remove everyone from the region.

Did it ever occur to you that this could be another instance of the U.S. saying "Screw this. We're not going it alone."?

I find it hard to believe the US cannot manage Afghanistan without Canada.

Really? U.S. RESERVES are spending tour after tour. I think it's quite likely that politicians are waking up and deciding that this is a hell of a cost, both monetarily and in lives.
Pull out. Let France and Spain... and Canada take their chances with terrorists. I don't say this in an adversarial way, I'm just saying that sometimes things aren't worth the cost, especially when no one else wants to help.

Canadian RESERVISTS are also doing tour after tour. I suspect our PM wants our troups ready to invade somewhere else - he is a neo-con & a hawk.
I think if Canada distanced itself from US foreign policy, we Canucks would be a lot safer. That will not happen in the next 4 ½ years.
Want to protect America by invading Libya? Who ya gonna call? Canada!

This should put things in perspective whenever we talk about any war that US has been in, or is currently in.

Only because they're counting the Indian Wars from 1775-1918 which is retarded.

And the whole last bunch were not declared wars. Then there's the "Cold War"... then what do they mean Invasion of Grenada 1983-1984? That didn't last that long.

And there's a whole crapload of military conflicts the US was involved in that is not included on that list, for some odd reason since you'd think this disingenuous person would include them... the Barbary Wars, the Boxer Rebellion, the Philippine-American War, the Banana Wars, etc.

Yay for finally admitting that going in to Afghanistan was wrong. So soon after Iraq too - one would think you Tejans enjoy eating humble pie...

it's about time we left afghanistan. we've spent an enormous amount of blood and treasure and achieved nothing.

wow, I just saw another clip of John McCain on the senate floor ripping the WV senator Manchin as an isolationist etc and this was McCain's line of logic - we already withdrew from Afghanistan once and that was followed by the Taliban and Al Qaeda and 9/11... So, we should have occupied Afghanistan when the Russians left? Thats insane! The Cold War was won because Russia was suckered into invading Afghanistan and McCain would have us jump straight into the frying pan the moment Russia jumped out?
