I recently saw clips of Sec Gates & Sen John McCain telling us we cant leave Afghanistan too soon because 9/11 was the resulting failure of our leaving Afghanistan earlier, I guess after the Russians pulled out...
So, we were attacked on 9/11 because we didn't occupy Afghanistan after the Russians ended their occupation?
I've heard plenty of pundits claim Gates is sharp - but thats crazy! Well, their point is we didn't fill "the void" in Afghanistan (I guess by nation building) after the Russians pulled out, but instead we supposedly ignored Afghanistan and that allowed Al Qaeda to set up shop (we never gave our blessings to SA/Pak to establish the Taliban?).
But thats still crazy! Al Qaeda can set up shop in many places with or without "states" in place. We gotta stay in Afghanistan (for how long?) so Al Qaeda wont move back in? I want them to move back in, they cant hide as easily - they need established states for protection. Who will protect Al Qaeda in Afghanistan from our missiles?
Does Gates make any sense?
I'd sooner accept humanitarian reasons, the Taliban have proven themselves undeserving of any authority over other peoples...
